Is a Luau specific to Hawaii? Or can it be for Caribbean themes?

I am getting married in Jamaica and then the following week we are having a reception at home, but we want it very casual...more like a party. Most party themes suggest a luau...tiki masks and such. Is that strictly Hawaiian? Should I search harder for Caribbean-themed party items? Or throw caution to the wind and have a Jamaican wedding and then a Hawaiian party back home?

I want to focus on flowers, beach, sand, water....FUN!!! Please advise!

just because you are in Jamaica does not mean you cant have an Hawaii theme for you party come on girl its your wedding do what make you happy good luck and have fun Hun
Reply:Hawaiians are of Samoan decent, Pacific islanders, If you want Caribbean, go with reggae, straw hats, and Voodoo dolls. Serve Rum and Red beer. Fish fired in coconut oil and a mango salad instead of the luau pig and poi. Since Jamaica was last a British colony, go with a pirate theme or a Spanish Cuban/Puerto Rico feel. Oh and don't forget the Cuban cigars as a legal alternative to what they really smoke in Jamaica.
Reply:I think you are putting too much stress on yourself. Just call your party a " tropical party" and stop worrying. No one will pay any attention, as long as you don't have hula dancers. Look at theses sites for some help.

Reply:Luaus are Hawaiian or Polynesian, but you can use pretty much same thing for a Caribbean party, like flower, and beach themed things and cocktails, lots of fruits, candles and fire lanterns, but not the tikis it has nothing to do with the Caribbean. Good Luck and Congratulations!!!!!
Reply:The only luau I have been to was from and by a Samoan family that I knew and it was right in Chicago... lol

Go for it

have fun

Reply:I don't think a Luau is specific to Hawaii. I have been to a few Samoan Luaus in my life :)

If you are concerned, just call it an "island party" or something similar. Have a blast, Jamaica sounds amazing!!
