Does this make us prejudice, because I am ignorant?

How am I supposed to know about alternate lifestyles if they don’t exactly teach us that in school? Honestly, my girlfriend and I showed up to a “rainbow fest”. We saw a bunch of tents and music playing. It was in a public place. We thought it was a Hawaiian party because everyone was dressed in flowers. There were food vendors and stuff. So we walked around and stopped to eat at one of the vendors. We realized after an hour that it was a gay function. Nobody said anything. Since we are not gay are we supposed to not be there? I guess we looked funny being a male-female couple. How are we supposed to know these things?

Another time we went to a small restaurant because the food smelled good. The waiter was clearly gay, but we didn’t care. The décor was nothing I had ever seen before, but who am I to judge? Then I asked the waiter if the flag behind the bar was for “green peace”(It was an American flag with rainbow stripes), he game me a very strange look.

Does this make us prejudice, because I am ignorant?
Having an open mind is a great thing- most do not hate or judge but there are always exceptions (I have been known to have a bad day or two) and I don't think anyone would be offended of you enjoying a festival or good food, and I doubt anyone judged you and were likely glad that you felt free enough to enjoy yourselves.
Reply:You are obviously NOT homophobic - you stumbled upon a gay event - participated, and seemingly had a good time. The vast majority of gays and lesbians do not discriminate against people in any way (we have some haters too but still the majority)

Sounds like you had a good time and I hope you continue to keep such an open mind.
Reply:I don't think you're homophobic, BUT...

...Honestly, I wonder how you could NOT know those sorts of things, unless you've been living under a rock for the last twenty years.

No, they don't teach it to you in school, but these days with all the media out there, they shouldn't HAVE to teach you. It's pretty damn easy to teach yourself. Just hanging out online often enough would do the trick, I would think.

-shrugs- Either way, ignorance is not homophobia, so... Live and learn, I suppose.

Cheers.
Reply:Straight people/ couples are welcome at any gay festival

I've ever been to. As long as you are there to have a good time and are open minded, no one cares.
Reply:no i dont thinnk there is anything wrong woth wat u did hes just being over sencitive ur allowed to ask %26gt;?S
Reply:Yes, the rainbow is the gay flag symbol.

Gays have straight friends and vice-versa so it's very okay for you to go and enjoy a gay event.

These events tend to be rather flamboyant. Some gays really know how to have fun. It's a bit like partying in New Orleans during MardiGras.

People who party tend to be friendly, so have fun.

PS. If you ask a question that they perceive to be dumb just explain to them that you've led a very sheltered life and that you're not trying to make fun of them.
